A pregnancy is a pregnancy here and in Timbuktu, right? Well no. It seems that the medical authorities do not agree on a global level regarding the foods allowed and those that are prohibited for all pregnant women. So much so that Each country imposes its own recommendations, and what is allowed in your country is contraindicated in the neighboring country. Surprising.
Here's a little test: in which country can pregnant women eat sushi? In which country do they have a glass of wine or champagne? Which country is fully allowed to have feta cheese? Japan, France, and Greece are the answers to each of these questions.
One of the worst things in my pregnancy was food bans. How I missed those slices of serrano ham or those paté toasts, a sushi-based dinner or a feta cheese salad. You can't drink a glass of wine at a celebration or go overboard with caffeine even if you fall asleep.
Food bans in pregnancy are aimed at avoiding listeria, salmonella or toxoplasmosis (which may contain raw, undercooked or unwashed foods) or the impact it may have on the developing fetus (as in the case of caffeine and alcohol). Based on this premise, many countries maintain the same recommendations, although when the food tradition is very strong, they turn a blind eye.
Here is an example of what you can and cannot eat depending on your nationality:
- Japanese women continue to eat sushi and sashimi during pregnancy as if it were the most normal thing in the world.
- In France it is normal to drink a glass of wine or champagne, always in moderation and without abuse. But they don't taste a drop of homemade mayonnaise.
- Greek pregnant women dress their dishes with their famous feta cheese, a national delicacy that is hard to resist.
- Americans and Italians don't eat sausages made with ham, turkey or salami.
- Arab women eat a lot of dates as they are good for the baby's bone formation.
To all this we must add the myths and popular beliefs of each country that they have nothing to do with science anymore. For example, in the Philippines, pregnant women eat raw eggs in the belief that it helps lubricate the vagina and this is beneficial during labor. In China they avoid the crab because the child could come out with 11 fingers and in some places in Tanzania women do not eat meat, believing that their baby could assume the characteristics of the animal.
Be that as it may, it is best to apply common sense and follow a healthy and balanced diet, even if it costs a little to pay more attention to what we can and cannot eat and we long for a good brie cheese.
